A powerful photographic and historical documentation, "Democracy: People Under Trial – 73" captures a pivotal moment in Bahrain’s political evolution. Through the lens of acclaimed Bahraini photographer Abdulla Alkhan, the book presents rare archival images from the year 1973 — the year of Bahrain’s first elected National Assembly.

All photos included in this book have been taken by Abdulla Mohammed Al Khan, the highly qualified photographer, born in Muharraq in 1937. The shooting of all pictures has taken place in Manama, Muharraq and Isa Town using black and white technology and over the years of 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975. Mr. Al Khan applied high standard of photography technology, employing 3 sophisticated cameras, Rollflex, Pentax and Panorama, while using B&W ILford films 125 ASA FP3. As such he successfully documented and corroborated the most two main post independence of Bahrain's history during the 70's, representing the constitutional council and the National Assembly of 1973. which resulted in compiling 800 pictures of this book during 5 sessions together with the opening sessions of the Assembly.

More than just visual storytelling, this book reflects the hopes, debates, and the unfolding challenges of democracy in its early stages. Complemented by the insightful narrative of Husain AlMahroos, it offers readers a layered understanding of a unique parliamentary experiment in the Gulf.

This is not just a photo book — it’s a preserved national memory, a visual record of voices, presence, and participation.
